US President Donald Trump told Iranians in a video address that his goal was to remove the government.
“When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take,” he said.
“The hour of your freedom is at hand.”
In an interview with FRANCE 24, the Guardian’s bureau chief David Smith called Trump’s remarks one of the “most extraordinary speeches from a US president in decades”.

Trump says US in ‘major combat’ to destroy Iran missiles, navy
US President Donald Trump announced that “major combat” is underway to destroy Iran’s missile forces and “annihilate” the country’s navy.
“The United States’ military began major combat operations in Iran,” Trump said in a video message posted on his social media site while he spent the weekend at his Florida golf club. “Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.”
“We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally – again – obliterated. We’re going to annihilate their navy,” Trump said.
He offered the military there “immunity” or “certain death” and told Iranians the “hour of your freedom is at hand”.
Another loud bang heard in Abu Dhabi: Reuters
Loud booms were heard in parts of Abu Dhabi on Saturday, according to five witnesses, including two Reuters correspondents.
One witness told Reuters she heard five booms in rapid succession that caused windows in a house near Abu Dhabi’s
Corniche to vibrate. Other witnesses in the Al Dhafra and Bateen areas heard loud booms as well.

Germany closely monitoring situation in Iran, Israel, wider region
Germany is closely monitoring the situation in Iran, Israel and the wider region, the foreign ministry said on Saturday after Israel and the US launched strikes against Iran, adding that the national crisis management team would meet at 12pm local time (11:00 GMT).
The ministry said it was in close and constant contact with embassies in the region and urged German nationals to follow instructions from local authorities regarding protection.

More blasts, sirens heard over Jerusalem: AFP journalists
A series of explosions were heard, and air raid sirens sounded over Jerusalem, AFP journalists reported, after Israel and the United States launched a joint attack on Iran.
The military said earlier that it had identified a barrage of missiles launched from Iran.
Iranian missile intercepted by Qatari missile defence: official
Qatari defence systems intercepted an Iranian missile, an official told AFP, as warning sirens sounded in the Gulf state.
Qatar’s US-made Patriot interceptors downed an Iranian missile, the official said on condition of anonymity.
Qatar hosts the Al-Udeid military base, the largest US military facility in the region.

The Israeli air force was striking Iranian military sites in the country’s west, the Israeli military said.
