As we celebrate the life of cinema legend Robert Redford, Erin Ogunkeye is pleased to welcome Stephen Galloway, former Executive Editor of The Hollywood Reporter and current Dean at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. Mr. Galloway brings a thoughtful, nuanced reflection on Redford’s legacy as actor, director, artist, and activist. Behind the enduring image of Hollywood’s “golden boy” was a man of great complexity. Redford maintained the mystique of movie star while reshaping culture through his directorial vision, his championing of independent cinema, and his deep commitment to environmentalism. “I was born with a dark eye,” he once revealed to Dean Galloway, affording him a perspective that shaped unforgettable performances in iconic films like “All the President’s Men” and a piercing directorial debut with Ordinary People. In stepping beyond the confines of fame, Redford carved out a unique niche and lasting legacy.
