Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the first batch of “nation-building projects” to help “turbocharge” Canada’s economy Thursday amid the unfolding trade war with the U.S.
Five projects – which are now eligible for fast-track approval by his Edmonton-based major projects office – were detailed by the Liberal leader, including the expansion, or “Phase 2” of LNG Canada, as well as an expansion to the Contrecœur Terminal Container Project in Quebec and the doubling of its liquefied natural gas production.
The other three projects awaiting evaluation are the construction of a small modular reactor at Ontario’s Darlington Nuclear Station, the McIlvenna Bay Foreign Copper Mine in east central Saskatchewan and an expansion of the Red Chris Mine’s copper operation in northwestern B.C.
Though Carney said these projects will “generate more than $60 billion” combined and “create tens of thousands of high-paying careers for our workers,” he assured they are “just the beginning” of his government’s efforts.
