AT least one person has been killed and nine others injured after being swept into the sea in Tenerife.
The tragedy happened in the well-known resort of Puerto de la Cruz, one of the most popular holiday spots on the island.
Local and national police rushed to the scene with the rest of the emergency resources.
Despite the best efforts to revive the woman, she could not be saved.
The injured people were transferred to different health centres.
Those affected mainly suffered trauma from impact against the pier or rocks, as well as complications from falling into the sea.
Three of them remain in serious condition, having suffered leg and hip injuries.
A person from the emergency rescue team said: “A woman died and nine injured when she fell into the water after a sea blow in Tenerife at Puerto de la Cruz Pier at 3pm.”
In January, a Brit tourist tragically died after being swept into the sea by a wave in Tenerife.
The holidaymaker, 63, was one of three people who got into difficulties at Los Gigantes natural swimming pool.
Emergency crews, including a rescue helicopter and firefighters, rushed to the scene.
A man was found face down in the sea and choppered to a nearby football ground.
The other two people swept into the sea, both women, and managed to reach safety themselves.
Local officials have been urging people in the Canary Islands to take care near the sea this week because of the strong swell and heavy waves.
In May 2017 a 30-year-old British tourist died after being hit by a wave and falling into the sea near the same cave.
