Beaucoup de monde aime se faire peur, que ce soit à l’occasion d’Halloween in France, de la fête des morts et des monstres en tout genre ou même juste pour rechercher un petit coup d’adrénaline.

Many people love to be scared, be it at Halloween, the Day of the Dead or celebrations of monsters of all kinds, or even just for a little adrenaline.

Pour beaucoup, il suffit de regarder des films d’horreur ou d’épouvante, pour d’autres plus téméraires, ils vont visiter une maison hantée dans un parc d’attraction par exemple.

For many, it’s enough just to watch horror or scary movies, but for others, more adventurous, they will visit a haunted house in an amusement park for example.

Ou bien comme nous l’avons fait récemment, nous sommes allés dans les bois sur les traces du loup garou de la Somme (une très vieille légende picarde). Je partage des photos avec vous, juste pour le plaisir !

Or as we did recently, we went in the woods in the footsteps of the werewolf of the Somme (a very old Picardy legend). Let me share pictures with you, just for the pleasure of it!

Mais bien entendu, Okami avait beau chercher, il nous a été impossible de trouver quoi que ce soit à propos de ce loup garou, d’autant plus qu’il est, selon la légende, redevenu un paysan normal, laissant ainsi en paix tous les moutons du voisinage. J’ai pensé aujourd’hui vous présenter un article sur le vocabulaire français associé à la peur, par l’intermédiaire d’une autre légende de la région beaucoup plus récente.

But of course, however hard Okami looked for it, it was impossible for us to find anything about this werewolf, especially since, according to the legend, he turned back into an ordinary farmer, leaving all the sheep of the neighbourhood in peace. I thought today that I’d present an article on French vocabulary associated with fear, through another much more recent legend of the region.

But very often what we forget to mention are the legends and fanciful stories of our region.

The Bloody House of Saint Quentin

Voilà, nous pouvons maintenant commencé la légende de la maison sanglante de Saint Quentin !

That’s it, we can now start the legend of the bloody house of Saint Quentin!

Parmi un très grand nombre d’histoires de sorcières, de loups-garous et de fantômes, j’ai décidé de vous raconter l’histoire de la maison sanglante de Saint Quentin.

Among a great many stories of witches, werewolves and ghosts, I decided to tell you the story of the bloody house of Saint Quentin.

Il paraîtrait qu’une maison mystérieuse et effrayante de Saint Quentin en Picardie aurait causé de nombreux problèmes aux propriétaires. Très vite après qu’ils ont emménagé, il a commencé à se passer des choses très étranges ! Pour commencer, ils entendaient chaque nuit des bruits atroces : des casseroles qui s’entrechoquaient, des craies qui crissait contre un tableau noir, des hurlements d’hommes qui agonisaient.

It would seem that a mysterious and frightening house of Saint Quentin in Picardy caused many problems for the owners. Soon after they moved in, some very strange thing started to happen! To begin with, they heard horrible noises every night: pots banging against each other, chalk scratching against a blackboard, screams of men dying.

Mais bizarrement, chaque fois qu’ils se levaient pour vérifier, rien n’avait bougé, aucun homme ne se trouvait là et bien sûr, rien n’était écrit sur le tableau noir. Alors tentant de rester rationnel, les habitants ont mis ça sur le compte des voisins ! Après tout c’était une maison mitoyenne !

But oddly, every time they got up to check, nothing had moved, no man was there and of course, nothing was written on the blackboard. So trying to stay rational, the inhabitants put it down to the neighbors ! After all it was a semidetached house !

Mais voilà, un jour les bruits étaient encore plus forts que d’habitude, le mari s’est alors levé pour faire son contrôle habituel pendant que la femme était restée au chaud dans son lit, attendant sagement son mari, avec bien évidemment les lumières allumées (c’est toujours plus rassurant !).

But there you go, one day the noises were even louder than usual, the husband then got up to do his usual check while the woman stayed warm in bed, wisely waiting for her husband, with the lights on, obviously (it’s always more reassuring!).

Bleeding Walls 🩸🩸🩸

C’est alors, que la femme s’est mise à voir un liquide rouge coulant le long des murs. Tous deux terrorisés, ils décidèrent d’appeler la police pour être sûr que personne n’était entrée par effraction pour leur jouer un mauvais tour.

It was then that the woman began to see a red liquid flowing down the walls. Both terrified, they decided to call the police to make sure that no one had broken in to play them a nasty trick.

La police a alors analysé ce liquide rouge qui se trouvait sur les murs. Il s’agissait de sang humain !

The police then analyzed the red liquid on the walls. It was human blood!

Incroyable, n’est-ce pas ?

Unbelievable, isn’t it?

Catching the Ghost 👻

Ils ont donc décidé de tendre un piège à l’éventuel mauvais plaisantin. Ils ont mis de la farine sur le sol et fermé la maison à clefs pendant une semaine afin que personne ne puisse entrer – pendant qu’eux allaient dormir chez leur parent.

So they decided to lay a trap to catch the possible joker. They put flour on the floor and locked the house for a week so that no one could enter – while they were going to sleep at their parent’s house.

Après 7 jours, ils sont retournés dans la maison. Rien n’avait bougé, aucune trace de pas n’était visible. Par contre, les murs étaient pleins de sang. Pris de panique le couple a décidé de louer un appartement et de faire appel à un prêtre pour exorciser leur maison. Après quoi ils ont réintégré leur maison hantée.

After 7 days, they returned to the house. Nothing had moved, no trace of footsteps was visible. However, the walls were covered in blood. Panicking, the couple decided to rent an apartment and to call a priest to exorcise their home. After which they returned to their haunted house.

Mais même après le passage du prêtre, le phénomène s’est poursuivi pendant de nombreuses semaines. Finalement, lassés et effrayés, le couple décida de mettre la maison en vente.

But even after the priest’s passage, the phenomenon continued for many weeks. Finally, tired and scared, the couple decided to put the house up for sale.

Mais comme vous pouvez vous en douter, c’était sans succès ! Qui voudrait acheter une maison hantée qui est d’ailleurs passée à la télé !

But as you can imagine, it was unsuccessful! Who would want to buy a haunted house that has also been on TV!

A Terrible Secret Unravelled

Ils ont alors démoli la maison pour se débarrasser de ce cauchemar et ont découvert quelque chose d’impressionnant !

They then demolished the house to get rid of this nightmare and discovered something astounding!

En démolissant la bâtisse, ils ont trouvé une cinquantaine de corps de soldats allemands datant de la première guerre mondiale dans les fondations.

Demolishing the building, they found about fifty bodies of German soldiers from the First World War in the foundations.

Peut-être étaient-ils hantés par ces hommes ! Ou peut-être s’agissait-il d’une étrange coïncidence !

Perhaps they were haunted by these men! Or maybe it was a strange coincidence!

On ne le saura jamais !

We’ll never know !
