President Macron will make the official announcement in September at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The United States and Israel immediately voiced their strong disapproval.
“Peace is possible”
In a message published on social network X, President Emmanuel Macron declared that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine in September. He added that this recognition will be announced solemnly at the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for the autumn.
“Faithful to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine”, wrote the Head of State, adding that “the urgent need today is for the war in Gaza to end and for the civilian population to be rescued. Peace is possible.”
A letter to Mahmoud Abbas
This message was accompanied by a personal letter addressed to Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, in which Emmanuel Macron affirms his determination to take concrete action in favor of a political solution.
“The French want peace in the Middle East. It is up to us, the French, together with the Israelis, the Palestinians and our European and international partners, to show that it is possible”, the President emphasizes, welcoming the commitments made by Mahmoud Abbas during their latest exchanges.
A diplomatic turning point
The information was confirmed by Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who said that the French Consul General in Jerusalem had handed over President Macron’s letter to the Palestinian Authority on Thursday July 24.
“I will confirm this commitment at the United Nations on Monday”, he announced on his own X account.
This initiative marks a major diplomatic turning point for France, which joins a growing list of European countries that have taken the step of officially recognizing the Palestinian state. It comes against the backdrop of an acute humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where international calls for a ceasefire and the resumption of dialogue are increasingly urgent.
Netanyahu condemns!
Like the United States, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu strongly condemned Emmanuel Macron’s announcement to recognize the State of Palestine in September, saying it “rewards terror” after the events of October 7, and asserting that Palestinians want to replace Israel, not live alongside it. For his part, Palestinian Vice-President Hussein al-Sheikh welcomed the decision, seeing it as support for the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.
In addition, an emergency meeting between France, the UK and Germany is scheduled to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer denounced the “suffering and starvation” as “indefensible”.
