The European Parliament is set to adopt its negotiating mandate on Mercosur, after which talks on the final shape of a trade deal can begin. The accord with Latin American countries would create a free trade area of more than 700 million people, at a time when the EU is locked in trade conflicts with China and the US. But despite promises of safeguards for European farmers, fears of being undercut by unfair competition have not disappeared.
